Wuhan Central Hospital was established in 1880, formerly Hankou Catholic Church Hospital, which was taken over by the municipal people's government in October 1952, and Wuhan Second Hospital was officially established in February 1955. In 1996, it was approved by the Ministry of Health of China as a "Grade III Grade A Hospital". In December 1999, with the approval of Hubei Provincial Department of Health and Wuhan Municipal People's Government, the hospital officially added the name of "Wuhan Central Hospital". In June 2010, Wuhan Central Hospital was attached to Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology.
