The predecessor of the Ninth People's Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine, "Bertelli Hospital", was established in 1920. In 1952, it was renamed as Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital. In 1964, it officially became the Ninth People's Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Second Medical University (hereinafter referred to as "the Ninth Hospital"). In 2005, Shanghai Second Medical University and Shanghai Jiaotong University were formally merged, and the Ninth Hospital was renamed as the Ninth People's Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine (hereinafter referred to as "the Ninth Hospital"). In November 2014, with the consent of the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, the Ninth People's Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine and the Third People's Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine (the former Baosteel Hospital and the third level general hospital) were integrated in resources, and the North and South hospitals were unified in layout and management. Shanghai Third People's Hospital (1) was named as "the Ninth People's Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine (the North Hospital)" The second was titled "The Third People's Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine". In October 2015, the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Organizational Structure approved that the Third People's Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine was incorporated into the Ninth People's Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine.

The Ninth Hospital is a non-profit Grade III Grade A general hospital sponsored by the government and approved by the Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau. The hospital headquarters is located in Huangpu District (No. 639, Zaoju Road), the central city of Shanghai, and the North Hospital/Third Hospital is located in Baosong District (No. 280, Mohe Road), the north wing of Shanghai. At the same time, in Pudong New Area of the city, there are Pudong Branch of the Ninth Hospital (No.166 Yanzhen Road), high-tech oral medical beauty clinic (No.350 Yanqiao Road), Xuhui District, Hongmei oral medical beauty clinic (No.3310 Hongmei Road), Jing'an District, Dagu oral medical beauty clinic (No.388 Dagu Road). The hospital undertakes the basic medical services in the city, mainly engaged in the treatment of acute, critical and difficult diseases. It is also the 120 designated hospital in Shanghai and the designated hospital for dental cadre health care and medical care in Shanghai.

Jiuyuan covers a total area of 109 mu (61 mu in the south and 48 mu in the north), a total construction area of 21 mu and 2000 square meters (1.44 million square meters in the south), 7000 square meters and 65000 square meters in the north). There were 1800 verified beds (1000 in the south and 800 in the north), and 1819 actually opened beds (1019 in the south and 800 in the north). The hospital has become a well-known Grade III Grade A comprehensive hospital in China with distinctive disciplinary characteristics, certain core competitiveness in clinical science and technology innovation.
